The Zombie Nazi

From the Neil Roberts Collection

At the close of the Second World War the forces of the crippled Third Reich were in retreat on all fronts. Desperate to gain back in one blow what had been lost piecemeal scientists throughout Germany worked feverishly to create war-winning weapons. Concepts that had been insane mere months before were now the focus of concerted and concentrated effort. Nothing could be allowed to stand in the way of Hitlers promised victory and so resources, lives and even human decency were sacrificed on the altar of expediency.

One such twisted practitioner of perverted science was Ulrich von Taillefer. His earlier experiments in sonic weaponry having failed he turned his attention to matters medical and the revivification of what he called battlefield remnants. Even as his staff laboured the research facility was attacked from the air, suffering devastating damage from allied bombing.

As von Taillefer fled the reagent he had developed was released to choke the life out of his staff. Within days the war was won by the allies and the reconstruction of Berlin began.

And that was where it should have ended, the facility buried in its own rubble, sealed in a tomb of its own creation. It would have ended there, had not a group of children scavenging for whatever they could recover and sell discovered the blank face of a battered steel door discovered it and wondered what lay beyond it. As they levered it open they heard movement in the darkness and imagined that they had become heroes in a country that badly needed heroes, that they had saved the life of some poor, trapped soul.

They could not have been more wrong.
